Kyle Lowry grew up in a tight-knit African-American household with the love and hard work of his mother. His parents, Marie Holloway and Lonnie Lowry Sr., separated when he was only seven.
Lonnie Lowry Sr. became estranged from the family and lived 10 minutes away from the family’s home.
Marie Holloway became the family’s unwavering pillar and raised Kyle alongside his elder brother, Lonnie Jr. She worked tirelessly at the IRS and the U.S. Post Office to provide for her boys.
Her disciplinarian mother, who worked at Dunkin’ Donuts, supported raising her children. Their dedication helped him become the champion he is known as today.

Kyle Lowry’s Brother was Behind His Athletic Success
NBA champion Kyle Lowry’s father was absent from his life, but he had his older brother, Lonnie Lowry Jr., who has been a constant father figure in his life.
Lonnie Jr. stepped up after their parents separated.
Lonnie Jr. became Kyle’s primary source of support, guidance, and protection.
He ensured that his brother didn’t follow in the same path as his childhood friends, who are no longer alive. He didn’t allow him to get any tattoos or piercings.
The Point guard has often said he owes his survival to his brother, who kept him from following the dangerous paths of some childhood friends.
Their sibling bond was built on basketball.
Lonnie Jr. taught Kyle how to play, pushing him in pickup games against older boys. He searched newspaper ads for AAU basketball tryouts and ensured that Kyle got there and made the team.
Beyond basketball, Lonnie Jr. gave him crucial emotional advice, teaching him not to dwell on their estranged father. His strict mentorship helped Kyle’s toughness and success.
