Friars Point Devastated by the Sudden Death of Ex-Coahoma Community College Football Player Rufus Wilkins, Following His Brother’s Passing Weeks Earlier

The Frias Point, Mississippi, community is mourning the untimely death of beloved native and former standout athlete, Rufus Wilkins.
Rufus Wilkins passed away earlier this week; however, details surrounding his untimely death are not yet available.
Born in Friars Point, Rufus Wilkins touched the lives of many with his remarkable athletic journey and his kind nature.
A graduate of Coahoma Agricultural High School (Clarksdale, MS) in 2012, Wilkins stood 6-foot-3 and weighed 185 pounds during his high school years.
He excelled in both basketball and football, earning varsity letters in each sport and becoming a key contributor on both teams.
On the basketball court, Wilkins wore jersey No. 1 and showcased his versatility by playing small forward, power forward, and shooting guard.
During his senior season in 2011, Coahoma Agricultural finished with a 10–6 overall record and placed fourth in district play.
Nationally, Wilkins ranked No. 6,371, while he placed No. 100 in Mississippi among senior basketball players, reflecting his impact and competitive standing.
On the football field, Wilkins lined up as both a wide receiver and defensive back, wearing No. 17.
He earned a national football ranking of No. 14,019 and ranked No. 306 in the state at his position group, continuing to show his willingness to contribute wherever needed.
Following high school, Wilkins continued his athletic journey at Coahoma Community College.
He joined the Tigers football program as a freshman, listed at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds. Playing wide receiver, he once again wore jersey No. 17 and represented his hometown of Friars Point with pride.
Wilkins also suited up for the Coahoma Community College men’s basketball team during the 2015–16 season.
Wearing No. 15, he played the forward position, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 205 pounds as a sophomore, and led his teams in several victories throughout his tenure.

The untimely death of Rufus Wilkins has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones.
Many of his loved ones are sharing Rufus’ memories on social media and extending their heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.
One wrote:
“Great-great nephew, Rufus Wilkins I’m 💔 💔 heartbroken. Great-great-great nephew – Dailen, I love ❤️ you and I’m always here for you!”
LaNita Ford DavisAnother added:
“Had any of us known we wouldnt get another chance to ride with you, I’m sure that night we would’ve road until the Sun came up… I’m so hurt to hear this happened to you Rufus… You didn’t deserve that. Praying for your family, & the ones whom loved you the most. Until we meet again, Ride in Paradise bro Rufus Wilkins 🏍️💨💨💨”
Trish TrishMany recalled Rufus Wilkins as a playful yet smart person who always had a smile on his face and who filled the room with his joyous nature.
His former teacher, Quiana N. Hannah, wrote:
“Always had a smile on his face. I can remember him always coming to my room to tell me about any situation. We always laughed and I always fussed( and I fussed a lot at them😂).As a teacher, you never forget your 1st class. They hold a special place in your heart. I’m praying heavily for his mom, children, and everyone that knew and loved him. May God give comfort and strength EVEN IN THIS!!!!
Praying that all will be well and God dispatch His angels around this grieving family and the surrounding areas in Coahoma County.”
Rufus Wilkins is survived by his mother and the entire family. He was preceded in death by his brother, who passed away two weeks before Rufus’ untimely death.
Rufus Wilkins’ contribution to the Mississippi community as a standout athlete and his kind nature will always be remembered. His family will soon provide details about his funeral and memorial services.
