Norwalk, Ohio Community Mourns Legendary Norwalk High School Basketball Coach and Buckeye Central Hall of Famer Steve Gray, Survived by Wife Sue and Three Daughters

The Norwalk, Ohio, community is mourning the death of beloved, longtime multi-sports coach and teacher, and former standout athlete, Steve Gray.

Steve Gray passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2026. According to some reports, he lost his life in a fatal car accident, however his family hasn’t yet revealed the actual cause of his demise.

A native of Ohio, Steve Gray touched the lives of numerous young athletes and students with his remarkable coaching skills and his career as a teacher.

Steve, a 1979 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, began his coaching career at his alma mater, Buckeye Central, in Crawford County, serving in his position for two years.

Furthermore, he continued his coaching career at Colonel Crawford High School as a Junior Varsity Coach and spent four years with the team before joining Ridgedale High School as a varsity boys basketball coach in Marion County.

After a remarkable journey at Ridgedale, Steve Gray moved to Lexington High School and served in the position of varsity boys head basketball coach for eight years.

He further continued his coaching journey, rejoining Colonel Crawford, where he guided the boys’ basketball team for a year before landing at Norwalk High School as a head boys basketball coach.

Norwalk High School was where Steve Gray spent most of his coaching journey. He led Norwalk High School boys basketball teams, the Tuckers, for 21 seasons before retiring in 2026.

Throughout his tenure of over two decades, Steve’s record was 312-188. He led his team in several victories and won several honorable titles.

Under his guidance, Norwalk won 7 league Championships, 13 Sectional Championships, appeared in 5 District Championships, and advanced to the Regional 3 times.

In 2014, Steve led the Norwalk Tuckers to a Division II State Championship. Likewise, during his tenure, his teams won 57 straight regular-season games, the 8th-longest winning streak in the history of Ohio Boys Basketball.

In 2011, Steve led Norwalk Tuckers to win their 1st NOL Championship in 49 years, and afterwards Norwalk went on to win 4 straight NOL titles under his leadership.

The Tuckers also appeared in three straight district titles games (2019-21) for the first time in program history, and just won four straight titles (2019-22) for the first time as well.

Steve also won several honorable titles throughout his tenure, being named District Coach of the year six times, Northwest and Ohio Division II Coach of the year, and many more.

In addition to his basketball coaching career, Steve also coached Volleyball, Track, Baseball, Football, and Golf.

Beyond his coaching career, Steve Gray served as a teacher for over three decades and served as a District 6 Secretary, Treasurer, and President.

Steve Gray Was Inducted into the Buckeye Central Hall of Fame in 2015

For his exceptional journey as a former athlete and coach at Buckeye Central High School, Steve Gray was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 2015.

A 1975 graduate, Gray played both football and basketball at Buckeye Central High School. He was a member of the school’s first-ever undefeated football team, going 9-0 in 1974.

Similarly, as a basketball player, Gray averaged more than seven points a game during his sophomore and senior seasons and more than 12 points a game as a junior.

The death of Steve Gray has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones. Many of his loved ones are sharing his memories on social media and extending their heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Steve Gray leaves behind his beloved wife of over four decades, Susan ‘Sue’ Gray, his three daughters, Elise, Kelsey, and Kailyn, his sons-in-law, grandchildren, and the entire family.

Steve’s contribution to the Ohio sports community and his kind and cheerful nature will always be remembered. His family will soon provide details about his funeral and memorial services.
