Despite being confined to a wheelchair after her battle with multiple sclerosis, Fernando’s mother, Elsa, has never missed one of his games.

Fernando Mendoza is a Cuban-American quarterback who just led the Indiana Hoosiers to their first national championship, beating Miami 27–21.

He won the 2026 Heisman Trophy, was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, and became a star after rising from a two-star recruit to a national champion.

His success is celebrated widely, especially in Miami’s Cuban-American community, where he is seen as a symbol of pride and achievement.

Elsa Depends on a Wheelchair for Mobility After Her Condition Worsened Following COVID‑19

Fernando Mendoza’s mother is Elsa Mendoza, who worked as a teacher before her health declined.

She has been living with multiple sclerosis (MS) for nearly 20 years, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the nervous system and gradually limits mobility.

The progression of MS, combined with complications after contracting COVID-19 in 2026, left her confined to a wheelchair.

Despite these challenges, Elsa remains a strong presence in her son’s life, attending his biggest games, including the Big Ten Championship, Rose Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Heisman ceremony.

Fernando often calls her “my why,” crediting her strength and daily fight as the inspiration behind his own determination and success on the football field.

Fernando occasionally speaks about his mother in public, often sharing how she has shaped his drive and inspired his success.

In 2026, he spoke publicly about his mother, Elsa Mendoza, dedicating his Heisman Trophy to her, saying:

Mami, this is your trophy as much as it is mine

Her presence in the stands, despite her struggles, has been a constant source of inspiration for Fernando.

Fernando Mendoza’s parents, Elsa and Fernando Sr., both have athletic backgrounds that shaped his competitive spirit.

Elsa played tennis in Miami and once hoped her son would follow her path, while Fernando Sr. won a gold medal in rowing at the 1987 Junior World Championships.

Together, they have been his strongest supporters, with Elsa playing a particularly influential role in motivating him throughout his journey.

Fernando chose football over tennis, led Indiana to back‑to‑back playoff wins, and thanked his mother in his Heisman speech for inspiring him.

Despite all her struggles with multiple sclerosis and the challenges of relying on a wheelchair, she always shows up with strength and support for her son.
