A boy, Austin Cornett, found himself at a heartbreaking crossroads when his coach told him that leaving for his grandmother’s funeral would mean the end of his basketball career.

The incident at Waldron Area Schools unfolded when senior player Austin Cornett was confronted with an impossible choice.

Just before Thanksgiving, as his family prepared to grieve the loss of his grandmother, Austin was told he must board the bus for a basketball scrimmage.

When he explained his situation to the coach, that his grandmother had passed away and his family needed to be together, the coach responded that leaving would mean the end of his basketball career.

Faced with this ultimatum, Austin chose his family over the sport.

The consequences were severe: his basketball future was cut short, and the school administration offered no support, no outreach, and no acknowledgment of the trauma endured by the student and his family.

Tammy Cornett, Austin’s mother, took to Facebook to share her frustration and heartbreak.

In her post, she described the treatment her child received as “unacceptable and deeply disturbing.”

She criticized both the basketball program and the school administration for their lack of accountability.

Furthermore, she recalled the personal hardships her family had faced, the loss of both parents within months, her husband’s absence due to work, and the overwhelming grief surrounding her mother’s funeral.

Tammy emphasized that despite raising her concerns earlier in the year, the school failed to investigate or provide support.

She concluded her post by stating that she could no longer describe Waldron Area Schools as compassionate or student-centered, given the way her son had been treated.

Community members quickly reacted to Tammy’s post, sharing their own points of view and condemning the school’s handling of the situation.

One commenter expressed outrage, saying,

“Shame on the school and administration. I’m so glad my Grandsons are no longer students there. That coach needs to go. So sorry for your loss. Merry Christmas.”

Another highlighted misplaced priorities, stating:

“It seems that some coaches think their sport program is the most valuable entity ever created.”

Others reflected on the broader impact of athletics on families, sharing their perspective by saying,

“Some of these sports have separated the family. Upside down priorities. It was not this way years ago.”
