Daniel Anthony Arriaga, an 18-year-old basketball player from Tucson, Arizona, was tragically shot at Manuel Herrera Jr. Park on January 17, 2026.

Arriaga was found critically wounded in a car at Manuel Herrera Jr. Park after a shooting incident.

Despite emergency aid and hospitalization, he passed away on January 19, 2026.

The accused, a 17-year-old, faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted robbery.

However, the possibility of release in 16 years has intensified grief and anger among Daniel’s loved ones, who feel they will never truly be free from the loss.

Justice for Daniel: A Mother’s Plea as Killer Could Walk Free in 16 Years

Daniel Anthony Arriaga was remembered not only as a victim of gun violence but also as a dedicated athlete whose passion for basketball defined much of his young life.

He attended Desert View High School in Tucson, Arizona, where he was celebrated as a promising basketball player and a standout athlete.

Known for his determination, discipline, and leadership both on and off the court, Daniel was often described as a “basketball star” by his peers and community.

His coaches and teammates admired his relentless work ethic, his ability to inspire others, and his vision for success in sports and academics.

Beyond basketball, Daniel also participated in other school athletics, including volleyball.

Though his career was tragically cut short at just 18 years old, Daniel’s legacy lives on through the memories of his teammates, friends, and family.

Elizabeth Nanez, the mother of Daniel Arriaga, recently shared a heartfelt post on Facebook, speaking directly to her late son.

She reflected on her role as a parent, saying:

I was given a job to guide you push you to be the best version of yourself and never be afraid to be you and try new things help others along the way be kind show love to be a hard worker off the courts

In her message, she expressed deep sorrow over Daniel’s murder, lamenting that while his killer could be freed in 16 years, her family will never be free from the pain of his loss.

She vowed to keep his voice alive, declaring,
