In the community of Inverness, Florida, a sunny Sunday morning turned into every parent’s worst nightmare on January 11, 2026.
Two inseparable 14-year-old best friends, George Watts and Derrick Hubbard, were out enjoying a day of adventure at a local park when tragedy struck.
The boys, both eighth-graders at Inverness Middle School and enthusiastic players for the Citrus 352 NFL Flag team, had been digging a tunnel in the area’s soft, powdery sugar sand, a type of fine, white sand common in Citrus County that’s notoriously unstable and prone to sudden collapses.
What started as innocent play ended in heartbreak as the tunnel caved in, leaving George Watts and best friend, Derrick Hubbard, trapped beneath the shifting earth.
According to reports from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded near East Live Oak Lane and North Twin Lakes Drive, just outside the Inverness city limits and close to Sportsman Park.
The boys had been playing together that morning, their laughter echoing through the park as they explored and built.
But when lunchtime rolled around, and neither child responded to calls from home, their worried parents headed out to search the area.
What they found was chilling, a large, ominous hole where the kids had last been seen. Fearing the worst, they immediately alerted emergency services.
“The caller thought the children were trapped inside the hole,” explained Haleigh Perez, the community relations specialist for the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and Fire/EMS personnel rushed to the scene, where one parent even used phone pinging to confirm the boys had been active in that spot just an hour earlier.
Rescuers worked frantically, locating the first child at 1:14 p.m. and the second at 1:17 p.m.
Both were pulled from the debris and given CPR on-site before being rushed to HCA Florida Citrus Hospital.
Tragically, one boy was pronounced dead at the local facility, while the other, in critical condition, was airlifted to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
By Monday afternoon, authorities confirmed the second child had also succumbed to his injuries, though initial reports held out faint hope as he fought for his life.
Sugar sand, often found in Florida’s coastal and inland regions, is deceptively dangerous for such activities.
Its loose, granular texture, reminiscent of table sugar, can shift without warning, creating voids that collapse under weight.
Experts from organizations like the National Park Service have long warned about the risks of digging deep holes or tunnels in beach or park sands, noting that collapses can happen in seconds and bury victims under tons of material, leading to suffocation or crush injuries.
In this case, the boys’ tunnel gave way suddenly, turning a playful escapade into a fatal accident that has left the community reeling.
The loss has rippled through Inverness Middle School, where George and Derrick were well-known for their energy and camaraderie on and off the field.
The Citrus County School District quickly mobilized support, issuing a statement that read,
“This situation has deeply affected many within our school and district community. We extend our heartfelt thoughts and support to the students, families, and all those impacted by this incident.”
Via FacebookA crisis team of counselors, social workers, and psychologists was on campus starting Monday, available throughout the week to help students, staff, and families process the grief.
School spokeswoman Lindsay Blair encouraged anyone needing extra assistance to reach out at 352-726-1471, emphasizing the importance of community care during such a devastating time.
For the families, the pain is beyond comprehension
George’s mother, Jasmine Watts, set up a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $35,000 to help cover emergency medical costs, funeral arrangements, and other unexpected expenses.
In her heartfelt message on the page, she described the boys’ unbreakable bond:
“Our family is built on deep love, togetherness, and community. We love our children with a burning passion, and we cherish their friends as if they were our own. Our home was always full of laughter, noise, and life—surrounded by a big posse of kids who grew up side by side, bonded like siblings.”
She recounted the horror of that day, noting how
“what should have been another day of childhood adventure turned into a heartbreaking loss that no parent should ever have to endure.”
Via FacebookGeorge’s father, known as Boogie Watts, shared his raw grief on Facebook, revealing that his son had been placed on life support at Shands Hospital.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, he wrote:
“MY SON George Watts IS CURRENTLY ON LIFE SUPPORT IN SHANDS HOSPITAL DUE TO A TRAGIC ACCIDENT…WE HAVE DECIDED TO MAKE HIM AN ORGAN DONOR & THAT GAVE US 48hrs WITH HIM WHILE THEY FOUND MATCHES…HE WILL HAVE HIS LAST WALK FROM HIS ROOM TO THE ELEVATORS…I WOULD LOVE EVERYONE WHO WOULD LOVE TO ATTEND TO BE THERE!! WE WILL HAVE AN 8HR WINDOW BEFORE TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE CAN MAKE IT!!”
Via FacebookThe decision to donate organs brought a glimmer of hope amid the sorrow, allowing George’s legacy to live on by saving others.
Jasmine’s own posts captured the depth of a mother’s anguish. One read, “~FOREVER 14~ I love you, George T Watts & Derrick Hubbard.”
In another, she poured out her heart:
“ID GIVE ANYTHING TO GO BACK TO THIS MOMENT I LOVE YOU GEORGE TYSHAUN WATTS #forever14 #forevermybaby I PRAY with everything in me that you know how much I truly love you adore you and would do anything for you and that i was ALWAYS there for EVERY LITTLE THING YOU DID i hope you know how extremely proud i am of who you were turning into you are apart of my WORLD I FEEL SO LOST WITHOUT YOU HOW DO I MOVE ON?! How do your siblings go on without you?!? WHY LORD JUST WHYYYYYY.”
Via FacebookFriends and community members have rallied around the families, sharing memories and calls for support.
Corey Edwards, a friend, posted on Facebook:
“This is truly heartbreaking. This picture explains their personality to a T. One will always make you laugh while the other will charm you. There are no words that can ease the pain their families are facing as they grieve the loss of their beautiful sons, George Watts and Derrick Hubbard. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with them during this unimaginable time. If you are able, please consider helping ease some of the financial burden by donating to their GoFundMe. Every bit of support means more than words can say.”
Via FacebookAs Inverness mourns, this tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers in everyday play and the fragility of life.
George and Derrick, forever 14, were full of dreams, curiosity, and the kind of friendship that lights up the world.
Their story has touched hearts far beyond Citrus County, prompting reflections on safety in natural play areas and the importance of vigilance.
In the wake of such loss, the community clings to memories of their vibrant spirits, offering prayers, donations, and shoulders to lean on as the families navigate an unthinkable path forward.
