The town of Durango, Colorado, is mourning the sudden loss of Sam Utzinger, leaving his wife, Jordyn, and their three young children to face a difficult new reality without him.

Sam was a devoted husband and father, and his passing has left a huge pain in the lives of those who knew him.

While details about the cause of his death remain private, the loss has been described as devastating by those close to the family.

Jordyn Utzinger, born Jordyn Harrison, grew up in nearby Bayfield, Colorado. She was a talented student-athlete at Bayfield High School, where she graduated in 2013.

During her time there, Jordyn shone on the field and court, playing soccer, volleyball, and basketball. She was also an energetic cheerleader, bringing spirit to her school’s events.

Her athletic background helped shape her into the strong, resilient person she is today.

Sam and Jordyn first met in 2014, just a year after her high school graduation, and they got married in 2017 July 8.

They built a life together filled with love and family, welcoming three beautiful children, two sons and one daughter, into the world.

The news of Sam’s death was shared by Recalibrate Church in Durango, a place where the family found community and support.

The church posted a heartfelt message:

“Our church family is mourning and heartbroken over the devastating loss that has occurred in the Utzinger family. As Jordyn and her three sweet children mourn the loss of Sam, we want to come together as a community to offer a blanket of love and support. Please pray for their family as they navigate this very painful season.”

To provide practical help during this difficult time, a Meal Train has been organized by Taylor Aguilera. The initiative aims to raise $15,000 to cover meals and other needs for the family.

The description on the Meal Train page echoes the church’s sentiment:

“We are heartbroken over the devastating loss that has occurred in the Utzinger family. As Jordyn and her three sweet children mourn the loss of Sam, we want to come together as a community to offer a blanket of love and support. By signing up for a meal, you are offering a tangible gift of time and care, providing nourishment and relief during a time when their emotional energy is completely spent. This Meal Train is a way to say, ‘We love you and are carrying you.’ We ask that you commit to continuous prayer for them—for strength, peace, and comfort to mend their broken hearts. Additionally, if you’re looking for other ways to share your love, consider bringing a favorite treat, a small toy, craft or project for the children, and a heartfelt card with your meal. These small gestures of light and joy can make a profound difference in helping them feel loved and seen in this very hard season. Thank you in advance for supporting them.”

The message ends with a comforting Bible verse from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4:

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

Family and friends have stepped up in remarkable ways to surround Jordyn and the children with care.

From prayers to practical acts of kindness, the Bayfield and Durango communities are showing what it means to stand together in times of grief.

Sam’s memory as a kind and compassionate man lives on through these efforts, reminding everyone of the impact one life can have.

As the Utzinger family begins to heal, the outpouring of support serves as a beacon of hope.

In a world that can feel overwhelming, stories like this highlight the power of community and faith to carry us through the darkest days.

If you’d like to contribute, visit the Meal Train page or reach out to Recalibrate Church for more ways to help.
