Takira DeAdra Koonce, 26, a determined athlete, beloved friend, and proud Miami native, died unexpectedly on January 5, 2026.

She was born June 8, 1999, grew up in Miami, and carried the lessons of sport, faith, and quiet kindness with her through every season of life.

A graduate of North Miami Senior High School, Takira competed in both basketball and track through middle and high school.

She went on to run track at Grambling State University and later finished her degree at Knox College in Illinois. Athletics shaped her: discipline, grit, and a refusal to let setbacks define her path.

In recent years, Takira faced a life-changing health battle with courage. After complications from COVID-19 resulted in the loss of a leg, she refused to stop moving forward. She even survived heart failure in the past.

She set her sights on becoming a Paralympian in track and field, a dream born from resilience, not resignation.

Friends say she channeled the same focus she showed on the track into rehabilitation and training, determined to compete at the highest level again.

Those who knew Takira remember more than achievements. She was a God-fearing woman who regularly attended women’s Bible studies.

A GoFundMe organized by John Castro of Miami, Florida, has been set up to help the family with funeral costs and related expenses.

The fundraiser note describes Takira as someone who “gave so much to others” and asks supporters to honor her legacy through donations, sharing memories, or offering kind words to the family.

He added, “Your support—whether through a donation, sharing a memory, or offering a kind word—will help honor Takira’s legacy and provide comfort to those who loved her. Thank you for helping us celebrate the life of someone who gave so much to others.”

To honor the late Athlete, the fundraiser is trying to raise just above $2000.

Teammates and friends responded to the news with grief and simple acts of tribute.

Many posted calls to “wear blue” in her honor. Messages poured in: “I love you girl,” “We blue down for you, babygirl,” and “Rest in peace teammate.”

One teammate wrote plainly, “I can’t lie I’m hurt.” Others offered prayers and condolences: “Sending love and prayers,” “So sorry for your loss.”

Those reactions reflect how Takira connected with others, not through spectacle but through steady support, friendshiip and shared goals.

Takira’s life was marked by small, deliberate joys. She wanted to travel, to see the world and to meet people from different cultures.
