Missouri Parents Warn School Closure Will Destroy Student Dreams and Sports Opportunities
Parents fear that consolidating high school populations will create overcrowded teams, limit playing time, and potentially shut out talented athletes who rely on sports for their future.

Concerns are mounting among Missouri parents after discussions surfaced about closing one of the community’s high schools, an action many believe will have devastating academic, emotional, and athletic consequences for local students.
In a series of posts shared in the We the People, 3 Schools Information group, parents expressed fear, frustration, and confusion about the proposal, arguing that the decision is being rushed and that communities are not being given an authentic voice in the process.
One anonymous participant expressed a concern that has become a common refrain among families: overcrowding and the loss of sports opportunities.
As per the post, students themselves have started to worry about their futures.
The parent wrote,
“Something that I’ve been hearing a lot of is kids talking about not being able to play their sport that they love due to being a larger group of kids,” “Take away something that they love and enjoy—maybe even the only thing they look forward to when going to school. Close one of our high schools, and it’s really going to hurt people and their dreams.”

The anonymous poster also noted concerns about classroom conditions, suggesting that larger class sizes will strain teachers’ ability to give individualized support. The parent also added,
“Teachers will have a harder time doing one-on-ones with the students that need the extra help,” “They really need to stop and think about their choices and how bad the outcome is going to be.”
Anonymous parentAnother central theme emerging from the discussion is student mental health. Parent Debbie Fattig gave one of the most emotional responses, warning that the fallout of closing a school could lead to tragic outcomes.

Well, I think myself along with many parents is we are afraid of the teen suicides there will be and even more violence in the schools. This is the wrong decision to close a school. Now all the students will suffer. I just wish they could think about the destruction this is going to cause. Many parents will pull their kids out of district. Then they are going to have to deal with that.
Debbie FattigAnother anonymous contributor questioned why the community has not been allowed to vote on the issue. The participant asked,
“Why can’t they just put it to a vote?” “We want 3. It’s gonna cost us this, but that’s not an option.”

Anonymous participantNot all comments were aligned with the concerns about sports opportunities. Kim Miller Thomas, a former Realtor at ReeceNichols Ide Capital Realty, LLC, offered a more optimistic view, arguing that talent will ultimately prevail despite potential team overcrowding.
She wrote,
If the athlete is better then the athletes that are currently playing they will get to play.
Kim Miller ThomasMoreover, Gale Carpenter from Saint Joseph, Missouri, replied to Kim’s comment. He said,
Kim Miller Thomas how do you even know? It’s not a level playing field. And it is multiple spots for players that are lost. Same with parts in school plays, spots for musicians . . . There are good reasons for smaller schools, and the opportunity to participate in things and find your niche is just one of those. There is plenty of time in life for these kids to get shut out of things.

That is false cause I know a lot of athletes at central that should play but don’t get a chance! Cause of politics and the rich poor thing. That’s a fact
