Michigan State Community Mourns the Passing of Beloved Superfan Steven DiVietri

The MSU community mourns the loss of longtime superfan Steven DiVietri, who passed away peacefully at home on December 3, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
His sister, Michelle DiVietri Henning, shared the sad news in the Facebook group Spartan Sports True Fans. She wrote:
“It’s with a heavy heart that I share with all of you that my brother Steven DiVietri passed away yesterday morning peacefully at home. All of your support during his journey meant the world to him. His funeral will be Saturday, December 13 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Lansing — visitation at 11:00 a.m., mass at noon.”
Via FacebookJust a few days earlier, on November 30, Michelle had posted an update that let everyone know the end was near:
“Steven is in the last stage of his journey. He put up a great fight as any Spartan would. Now it’s time for him to rest. Keep him in your prayers.”
Via FacebookSteven had made the difficult decision to stop chemotherapy in mid-November. Even then, he stayed connected to the Spartan world he loved so much.
Steven grew up in Lansing and graduated from Eastern High School.
For decades, he was one of the most recognizable and passionate MSU fans anywhere.
Whether it was football Saturdays at Spartan Stadium, basketball nights at the Breslin Center, or just everyday conversations online, Steven was always there, cheering, commenting, and spreading Go Green spirit.
People didn’t just know his name. They felt his presence
When word spread that Steven had entered hospice care, the Spartan Nation showed up in the most beautiful ways.
On November 2, Fran Wresinski shared a touching announcement on behalf of radio host Glen Dudasik:
“Tomorrow night I am performing a holiday radio show on his behalf to celebrate the seasons both present and past… Knowing Steven is in late-stage hospice care due to a long battle with cancer, I reached out to his family with this idea of bringing the holidays to him — as best I can and in a way meaningful to him — through the Herald airwaves.”
Via FacebookThe next evening, November 3, from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m., Glen played Christmas music live on LansingHerald.com just for Steven. Fans from all over tuned in to celebrate their friend.

Since the news broke, the condolences have been pouring in nonstop.

“The Spartan community lost one of its brightest lights yesterday morning… Steven wasn’t just a follower of this page — he was a constant presence, always here with passion, positivity, and unwavering support for the Green and White… Once a Spartan, always a Spartan. Rest in peace, Steven.”

“Had the privilege to get to know Steven over the past few years… Those who knew Steven probably also knew of his long and courageous fight with cancer. He battled with it for many years and never let it slow him down… Over the past few weeks when he elected to stop his chemo and enter hospice care, he would still message me about my latest article or listening to our latest podcast episode… We lost a good one yesterday… RIP Steven! As always! Go Green!”

Friends and fellow Spartans who wish to pay their respects to Steven are welcome to attend the funeral on Saturday, December 13, 2026, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Lansing.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., giving everyone a chance to visit with the family and share memories, and the Funeral Mass will follow at noon.
It’s a heartfelt opportunity for the entire Michigan State community to come together, say goodbye, and celebrate the life of one of the green-and-white’s most loyal fans.
Steven DiVietri spent his life loving Michigan State with everything he had, and in return, thousands of Spartans loved him right back.
His seat might be empty now, but his spirit will be in every “Go Green, Go White” chant for years to come.
