Michael Jeffrey Canil’s death on December 7, 2026, has left the Bethel and Fairfield communities grieving the loss of a man whose life centered on service, loyalty, and love.

Michael, 35, of Bethel, CT, passed away on Sunday, leaving behind a legacy defined by compassion, courage, and unwavering dedication to others.

Born on April 18, 1990, in Stamford, CT, Michael spent his life lifting others up.

Friends and family recall how he made people feel understood, protected, and valued.

His generosity and humor shaped every relationship he formed and every role he embraced.

Michael’s path of service began early. After graduating from Westhill High School, he discovered his passion for ROTC—a spark that instilled discipline, purpose, and a commitment to helping others.

He later found his first calling teaching martial arts in South Salem, NY, where he guided students with patience and confidence.

During that time, Michael joined the Vista Fire Department as a Firefighter/EMT, falling in love with the responsibility, teamwork, and constant readiness the job demanded.

He continued to expand his service by working as an EMT and eventually as a 911 dispatcher, using his calm strength and compassion to support people in their most vulnerable moments.

In 2026, Michael proudly joined the Fairfield Fire Department.

His colleagues remember him as a dedicated firefighter whose bravery and camaraderie reflected the best of who he was—selfless, loyal, and always ready to step forward when others needed help.

Outside of work, Michael lived with passion and adventure. Martial arts grounded him and pushed him to grow in discipline and resilience.

Fishing gave him peace and clarity, becoming a pastime he returned to for joy and reflection.

He also embraced every opportunity to travel, seeking out new experiences and building memories with the people who meant the most to him.

Michael is also survived by his parents, Jeffrey and Maureen Canil; his sister, Kristen Canil; his mother and father-in-law, Tony and Lynn Faugno; his brothers-in-law, William and TJ Faugno and family; and many devoted aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends. He is predeceased by his brother, Matthew Canil.

Those who knew Michael say he touched countless lives with his kindness, sharp wit, and unwavering compassion.

His death leaves a profound void, but his influence continues through the love he shared, the lives he helped, and the example he set every day.

Michael will be deeply missed and forever remembered by the many people whose lives he enriched.

Visitation for Michael will take place on Tuesday, December 16, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home on Main Street in Danbury.

Family, friends, colleagues, and community members will gather during this time to offer their support and honor the profound impact Michael had on so many lives.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated the following day, Wednesday, December 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church on Dodgingtown Road in Bethel.

Loved ones will come together to reflect on Michael’s life, mourn his loss, and celebrate the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
