The University of the West Indies (UWI) community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Ms. Alexia Trim, a final-year Law student who passed away in Colombia on Wednesday, October 22, 2026, just one day before she was set to graduate with First-Class Honours in her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.

Alexia, who was enrolled in the Faculty of Law at UWI St. Augustine Campus, had been battling Arterio-Venous Malformation (AVM)—a rare medical condition involving abnormal connections between arteries and veins.

In her courageous fight for recovery, she was airlifted to Colombia for specialized medical treatment.

Unfortunately, complications arose following a procedure, and she was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite medical efforts, Alexia passed away after 5 p.m.

Her passing transformed what should have been a day of celebration into one of profound sorrow across the UWI community.

The Faculty of Law released a statement expressing deep sympathy:

“Alexia was supposed to graduate today with a Bachelor of Law degree with first-class honours. The Faculty extends condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Alexia Trim.”

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) also paid tribute to Alexia’s extraordinary potential and achievements.

Earlier this year, she represented UWI at the 15th CCJ International Law Moot Competition, where she earned the Sir Henry Forde Best Oralist Award.

The CCJ described her as a “remarkable young woman whose talent and dedication shone brightly,” noting that her eloquence and passion for law inspired both peers and judges.

The St. Joseph’s Convent Port of Spain Past Pupils’ Association, of which Alexia was a proud alumna, expressed similar sentiments, extending condolences to her family, classmates, and friends.

She passed away on the day before she was supposed to graduate… May perpetual light shine upon her, and may Alexia rest in eternal peace,” the association shared.

The University of the West Indies, her mentors, and the wider legal community continue to honor Alexia’s legacy — one marked by courage, brilliance, and resilience.

Her journey serves as a reminder of life’s fragility and the power of perseverance in the face of hardship.

Though Alexia’s life was tragically cut short, her academic excellence and unwavering determination have left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

The UWI family joins the Trim family in mourning her loss and celebrating the legacy she leaves behind — one of hope, intellect, and inspiration.
