Roy Bushman took to his Facebook on December 3, 2026, to share a story that’s been sticking with him ever since.

Yesterday evening, Roy had one of those perfect winter evenings in Mason.

First, a Sun Do class with good friends, followed by a big dinner, which he ate after joking about teaching yoga if somebody fed him. After that, he watched Tennessee basketball at another buddy’s place, and then caught some Stagger Lee music downtown.

To say the least, Roy’s heart was full and just ready to head home.

When he finally pulled onto his street, he saw taillights glowing in the dark. A delivery truck was high-centered in the deep with unplowed snow right smack in front of his house.

Roy, who lives in the last house on the right, revealed that the city plow never quite makes it that far.

The driver was a young African-American gentleman, sitting behind the wheel, looking nervous.

Roy then got out of his car, walked up, and said, “Hey, that’s my driveway I was hoping to use tonight.

The driver just stared for a second, and Roy smiled and added, “Don’t worry, we’ll figure this out together.

He went inside, grabbed an old blanket, laid it under the back wheels for traction, and stood out in the cold talking the driver through it.

Roy taught him how to pull all the way forward in his driveway, then hit reverse to get over the unplowed snow and head in the direction of the exit.

Four or five tries later, the truck lurched free. The young man then stopped by to thank him about three times and drove off into the night.

Roy wrote that it costs nothing to be kind and shared a story about why it hit him so hard.

Years ago, when he was really down (lower than he likes to talk about), a skinny little Black stranger saw him hurting, walked straight over, and gave him a hug that changed everything.

That hug pulled the sadness right out of him, reminded him that people are good, and set him on the path to becoming the man he is now.

Roy never saw the guy again, but he’s never forgotten him either. He wrote:

I’ve never seen him since, but I will always remember his kindness, and will pay it forward, and will fight against the racism that divides us. Humanity is too precious to let something as insignificant as skin color separate us.

So when that delivery truck got stuck, Roy didn’t see a stranger or a skin color. He saw somebody who needed help, and he remembered the hug that once saved him.

He ended his post with this: “It’s more than being “not racist”, we need to reach out for connection and stop this divisive rhetoric. Be an angel, make a difference, be there for someone in need even if you are not the type they are expecting help from. We need each other in these difficult times.
