The death of 18-year-old Crayton Smith has left his family, friends, and community heartbroken after he fought courageously against cancer for nearly three years.
Crayton passed away on December 6, 2026, the same day he reached his eighteenth birthday, marking the end of a journey defined by strength, faith, and unwavering love.
Just a day before Crayton’s passing, his mother, Joanna Pettus Smith, reached out to friends and loved ones, sharing that her “sweetest boy” was fighting for his life in the PICU at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
She asked everyone she knew to lift Crayton up in prayer, trusting in the power of faith and God’s healing.
She shared scripture as an anchor in the storm, declaring,
“I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done” (Psalm 118:17).
FacebookOn December 7, family friend Barb Glaser announced Crayton’s death, describing him as someone anyone who met instantly loved.
She emphasized that he was now pain-free and whole again, resting in the arms of the Savior he passionately believed in.
Her tribute captured what so many felt: Crayton truly touched hearts forever.
Family friend Adam Glass expressed deep gratitude for the support and prayers that surrounded Crayton.
He shared that Crayton made it to his 18th birthday and wrote that he wished he could have witnessed Crayton “run into the arms of his heavenly Father.”
He also asked the community to pray for Crayton’s family and his sister Addy as they adjust to life without him.
Crayton’s uncle, David Smith, spoke with raw emotion about the unimaginable pain of losing someone so young and so deeply loved.
He honored Crayton as “one of the strongest, most selfless, loving and loyal people you could ever meet,” adding that the family was blessed with 18 short but extraordinary years with him.
He closed with a heartfelt message:
“Live in His Presence (L.I.H.P) Crayton…💔 12/6/2007–12/6/2026.”
FacebookAnother uncle, Thomas Smith, reflected on the profound impact Crayton had on everyone who knew him. He described Crayton as remarkably selfless, faithful, honorable, giving, and tough.
Thomas shared that Crayton fought cancer for nearly three years and continued to think of others even in his final moments.
He thanked God for the precious time the family had with Crayton and asked the community to pray for Crayton’s parents and siblings as they navigate this painful chapter.
The USA Scout organization also shared the heartbreaking news, noting Crayton’s tremendously courageous fight against cancer.
They remembered him as a phenomenal young man with a gracious, kind-hearted spirit—someone who made others better simply by being present.
They asked for continued prayers for the Smith family as they awaited funeral arrangements.
In response to the immense grief felt across the community, a Night of Prayer for Crayton’s family has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, at 7 p.m. at the Harrison High School Football Field, led by Burnt Hickory Baptist Church and High School Pastor Seth Bundy.
Organizer Barb Glaser urged the community to come together to pray for Crayton’s loved ones and all who were touched by his life.
Crayton Smith’s death has devastated countless people, but it has also brought to light the incredible impact he made in just 18 years.
As his family mourns the loss of a son, brother, nephew, and friend, the community stands united in prayer, holding tightly to the memory of a remarkable young man whose light will never fade.
