Recently, Jeff Rivera shared a heartfelt story on Facebook about how one pair of shoes changed his life.
In the post, he recalled his struggles as a 13-year-old growing up in New York.
At the time, Jeff was very skinny and weak. He was not good at sports. He could not play football, could not shoot hoops, and struggled with the mile run in P.E. class.
Jeff Rivera Reflects on His Childhood Bullying and Its Impact on Him!
In his post, Jeff explained that he was often the last one picked for teams. His confidence was very low.
On top of that, he was bullied by other boys for wearing cheap shoes from Payless, called XJ900s.
Looking at his shoe, the kids at school teased him every day. They laughed at his shoes and made him feel even worse.
Things took a good turn for Jeff when his mother managed to buy him a pair of Nike Airs from a local Goodwill.
The shoes were used, but Jeff cleaned them and walked into the gym with pride. That day, something remarkable happened.
During the mile run in P.E., Jeff ran faster than ever. He passed several students and finished the mile in 7 minutes and 13 seconds.
Jeff realized that the shoes themselves did not give him this ability. It was believing in himself that made the difference.
He learned a powerful lesson about self-confidence. As he explained, the ability to succeed was always within him; he just needed to believe it.
Following Jeff’s story, many have commented, expressing their support and memories. One person in the comments wrote:
I am so sorry that you were bullied. I never knew or saw it and would have stood up for you. I was also Payless shoes and name brand anything was something we almost never had unless they were donations from others. I can still feel my lungs burning when I think about it from the weekly 8am Poynter mile. White t-shirts and black shorts if I remember right. Your resilience is inspiring.
Moreover, Jeff’s story inspired others, including his younger brother, Stephen, who remembered the XJ900 shoes as “cool” at the time.
Friends and readers also shared their support and related stories of childhood struggles and bullying.
Having faced bullying in his early life, Jeff now seems to be fulfilling a career in multiple fields as an entrepreneur and in the television industry.
