Detroit Loses a Legend: Coach Brian Newton Sr., 62, Passed Away, Leaving His Wife and 2 Children

Brian Newton Sr., an assistant baseball coach at Mumford High School, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 62 in December 2026.

He had a major operation and was in a rehabilitation center in November 2026.

Brian Newton Sr. dedicated his life to the Detroit community, and his true passion was giving back through sports. He graduated from Mumford High School and attended Wayne State University.

He served as the head baseball coach at his beloved Mumford High and also dedicated his time as an assistant coach.

Since 2026, he shared his knowledge and mentorship with student-athletes across the Detroit Public Schools Community District.

Away from the field, Brian built a strong career in facility operations, working as a Janitorial Supervisor at the Kmart Distribution Center.

Detroit PSL Pioneer Brian Newton Sr. Dies at 62

Brian Newton Sr., the son of the late Doris J Newton and Van Robert Newton, was born in Detroit, Michigan.

He was a pillar of his family and a legendary figure in Detroit athletics.

Brian’s life was dedicated to innovation and quiet mentorship.

Many knew him as a brilliant baseball mind, but his family knew him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

He married the love of his life, Janiese, in 1992, and together they built a beautiful family, giving birth to his cherished children, Cece A. Newton and Brian Newton Jr.

His role as a father brought him immense joy, and he was a proud and loving grandfather to his granddaughters, Jaelynn and Madison Mitchell.

Furthermore, Brian was a transformative force for the young athletes.

On the football field, he was a visionary, pioneering the modern passing and screen game in the Detroit Public School League at a time when such strategies were rare.

His innovative mind changed how the game was played and taught, leaving an indelible mark on PSL football history.

Moreover, his true legacy lies in the countless lives he shaped. He was a father figure, a steady guide, and a better mentor to kids.

My guy Brian Newton Sr. (Coach Fig) truly one of the greats when it comes to sports, but an even better mentor when it comes to kids I can keep going and going about my experiences. Rest Easy, Coach 🤞🏾🤞🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Above all, Brian Newton Sr. was a great man.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his loving wife, Janiese; his children, Cece and Brian Jr.; and his granddaughters, Jaelynn and Madison.

Similarly, he’ll be missed by the vast extended family of relatives, friends, and generations of athletes who were fortunate enough to call him Coach.

The Newton family will soon announce a memorial service to celebrate the life of a beloved coach. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.
