A longtime respected wrestling coach, teacher, and leader at Delta High School, Jason Thomas, passed away in a car accident on Monday night, December 8, 2026.
Jason Thomas wasn’t just a coach; he was the heart of the Delta wrestling program. He had been part of the Delta High School wrestling team for over 30 years.
He spent all those years coaching wrestling, first as an assistant and later as head coach.
Let alone wrestling, Jason also coached football and even served as the school’s athletic director for a while.
Besides coaching, he taught English and German, and was the kind of teacher who really sees his students and pushes them to do their best.
Recently, Jason was given the Extra Yard for Teachers Award from the College Football Playoff Foundation in October 2026 because someone in the community nominated him.
They picked him because he’s always gone the extra mile for his students, whether it’s in the classroom, on the wrestling ring, or anywhere else at the school.
Jason Thomas is survived by his children, brother, Thurmon Thomas, cousin, Jim Thomas, and extended family.
Thurmon Thomas, his younger brother, penned a brief eulogy expressing his loss:
My big brother, my hero, and mentor. Jason taught me what it means to be a good father.
Thurmon ThomasJason Thomas dedicated a lengthy period of over 3 decades to the Delta wrestling program and built the Rabbit wrestling room into something special.
It was his leadership that helped to shape the school’s wrestling culture. He contributed to numerous state championships and established Delta as one of Utah’s most competitive and respected programs.
People who wrestled for him years ago still talk about him the same way kids on the team today do.
After his tragic passing, the Delta wrestling team took to their social media to express their grief over his sudden loss.
Our wrestling community has lost a legend. Coach Jason Thomas was an integral part of Delta Wrestling for over 30 years
Delta wrestling teamThe team asked everyone to wear red and pack the gym for the home match on Wednesday night on December 10, 2026, writing, “To honor him tomorrow night at our home dual, we want FILL THE STANDS with DELTA RED!“
The wrestlers will walk around with buckets, collecting cash and checks for the Thomas family.
Likewise, they are also selling raffle tickets for a Delta Flyers party package, and all the money collected will go to his family.
Every dollar goes straight to Jason’s family to help with funeral costs and everything else that comes after something like this.
They also shared a Venmo QR code for anyone who can’t make it to the match but still wants to help.
Away from coaching and teaching, Jason loved hunting, fishing, anything outdoors, and watching his own kids play sports.
Even after decades, he remembered and loved his very first concert, Ozzy Osbourne and Mötley Crüe, back when he was in 8th grade.
He listened to country, country, rock, and anything from the 80s, and his favorite movies are all the Rocky films.
Jason shared that if he could jump in a time machine, he’d go straight back to 1985, and if he won the lottery, he wants to visit the Alps in Germany and Switzerland.
Likewise, he also revealed that his hero was the Savior, and if he could pick any superpower, it would be flying.
Now that he is no more, many of those who knew him have shared their condolences.
So far, the family hasn’t shared details surrounding his funeral and memorial services as they are grieving privately for his loss.
During this challenging time, we pray for the strength of Jason Thomas’ family and friends.
Rest In Heavenly Peace, Jason Thomas!
