Anamosa High School Football Coach Jeffery J. Steffensmeier’s Death at 58 Leaves Cedar Rapids and Farley Communities in Mourning

A life of leadership, kindness, and service comes to a tragic end.

The community of Cedar Rapids and Farley, Iowa, is mourning the death of 58-year-old Jeffery J. Steffensmeier, who passed away on Friday, December 6, 2026, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

He died from injuries he sustained in a tragic farm accident, leaving family, friends, and colleagues heartbroken.

Family members announced that friends and relatives may pay their respects from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2026, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Farley.

A wake service will begin at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday morning after 9 a.m.

Services for Jeff will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Farley. Rev. Christopher Podhajsky will preside, with Rev. Steven Garner co-celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Farley.

Jeff entered the world on December 5, 1967, in Dubuque, Iowa, as the son of Wilfred and Andrea (Ries) Steffensmeier.

He attended St. Joseph’s Elementary and later graduated from Western Dubuque High School in Epworth. He continued his education at Iowa State University.

Throughout his career, Jeff built a strong reputation in the banking industry. As Vice President and Senior Business Banker at Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank, he dedicated himself to supporting clients and colleagues.

He took pride in his role as a loan officer and manager and spent years mentoring individuals in both farming and banking, helping shape the futures of many.

Beyond his career, Jeff embraced a life rooted in family, faith, and community.

He was an enthusiastic supporter of both the Hawkeyes and Cyclones and devoted countless hours to coaching youth baseball.

He also served as a coach for the Anamosa High School football team, where he inspired young athletes with his leadership and encouragement.

Jeff cherished his family above all else. As a proud father, he supported his children wholeheartedly and found joy in spending time with them.

He also enjoyed working on the family farm alongside his father, a place that strengthened their bond.

His deep faith guided him throughout his life, and he was a devoted member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Cedar Rapids as well as an active participant in the Cedar Rapids Rotary Club.

Jeff leaves behind a loving family who will forever honor his memory: his children, Andrew Steffensmeier of Cedar Rapids (Kaitlyn Bastin), Adam (Kayla) Steffensmeier of Ames, and Allyson Steffensmeier of North Liberty; his father, Wilfred Steffensmeier of Farley; his brothers, Jason (Carmen) Steffensmeier of Farley, and Joe (Janette) Steffensmeier of Coralville; his nephews, Jared and Cody; his niece, Sienna; along with numerous aunts and uncles.

He now reunites with those who passed before him, including his mother, Andrea Steffensmeier, who died on April 9, 2026; his brother, Robert Steffensmeier, who died in infancy; and many extended family members.

Jeffery J. Steffensmeier’s death marks a profound loss for all who knew him.

His leadership, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family and community will remain cherished and remembered for years to come.
