In the Rio Grande Valley, down in Edinburg, Texas, a family is trying to pick up the pieces after a fire took away their house and almost everything inside it.
An elderly couple, 74-year-old grandfather Francisco Hernandez and 60-year-old grandmother Paula Hernandez, lost everything in a house fire while they were caring for their 12-year-old granddaughter, Skyla.
Skyla has lived with her grandparents for a long time now.
After her dad passed away when she was really young and her mom left the country, her grandparents stepped in without hesitation.
They became her parents in every way that mattered. They gave her not only a shelter but a home where she feels safe and everything she needed for school.
That house in the Rio Grande Valley was the only real home Skyla had ever known.
However, a little while back, something tragic happened that made their world turn upside down.
A little while back, something went wrong with the wiring close to the breaker box of their Rio Grande Valley.
It started a fire that spread fast, and unfortunately, the flames destroyed the whole place. There was no insurance on the house to help cover any of it.
When the fire was finally put out, almost nothing was left that they could save.
On top of that, there was no fire insurance. However, the three of them got out okay, and they’re thankful for that more than anything.
Meanwhile, they are facing a really hard road ahead with no walls to go back to.

This house fire burned her clothes, her shoes, her school supplies, and even the things that made her room feel like hers.
It has been nothing but very tough for Francisco and Paula to have worked hard their entire lives to build something stable, and seeing it gone in a night.
Still, they’re keeping their focus on Skyla and making sure she has what she needs to keep going.
Right now, the family is asking for help with the basics. They need clothes and shoes that fit, especially for Sklya, who wears a size 6½ in shoes and small shirts.
Likewise, they require food, a temporary place to stay, and, later on, enough to start building a small and safe home again.
Jasmen Hernandez, Skylar’s cousin, set up a GoFundMe fundraiser campaign to collect donations for these things.
She wrote about how much her grandparents have always been there for everyone, and how heartbreaking it is to watch them go through this, especially with a young girl depending on them.
It’s a rough situation, but especially for Skyla, who has already been through so much from losing her dad, her mom walking away, and now this fire taking the one place that felt permanent.
