A routine shopping trip at the Adairsville Cracker Barrel turned into a deeply disturbing scene recently when a local woman witnessed what she described as repeated acts of physical abuse against a toddler inside the store.

The incident, which has since spread across social media, has sparked outrage among residents and raised serious concerns about child safety in the community.

Woman Breaks Down After Witnessing Alleged Abuse

The witness, who identified herself as Steph, shared her account in a now-viral post. She said she was at the checkout when she heard a young boy, estimated to be between two and three years old, screaming and crying.

When she turned to look, she said she saw the child sitting between a man’s feet on a mobility scooter.

According to Steph, the man was slapping the boy hard across the face, repeatedly, while yelling at him to stop crying or he would give him something to cry about.

Steph said she stepped outside to collect herself because she was visibly shaking and overwhelmed. She admitted she almost walked away and told herself not to get involved, but her instincts as a mother would not allow her to leave.

She went back inside, took a photo of the man, and told him directly that she had already called the police and was documenting what she saw as abuse.

The man reportedly told her it was none of her business and that he would discipline the children however he saw fit.

When police arrived, they reviewed video footage that Steph said confirmed her account. Officers asked her how many times the child had been struck. She said she stopped counting after the fourth or fifth slap but continued hearing the sound of each hit.

The mother of the children was present during the incident and later told officers that the man was her father and that she gave him full permission to discipline her children that way.

Community Reacts With Anger and Concern

The post was reshared by Wendy Kuykendall in the Citizens Involved in Adairsville group, where it quickly drew strong reactions from members of the community.

Lois Learman Raley wrote,

“How terribly sad. I am so happy you stepped in. I’m sorry but if this creature said you could just take him, if it was me that baby would have been off this creature’s lap until the police came.”

McClane Rogers commented,

“Looks like the type to be honest. Good on you to be a good person and saying something. Not that it takes a good person to not assault and harm children, you’d think it’s common sense.”

However, some users raised questions about the details of the post. Anonymous participant 801 noted,

“I’m confused as this picture is of someone sitting down to dinner. Not someone riding on a mobility scooter. The post says she videoed it. This doesn’t make sense.”

Steph said officers were still on scene gathering additional statements when she was cleared to leave, and that she expected to be contacted to sign an official statement.

She closed her post with a message directed at anyone who might witness something similar, urging people to speak up and advocate for children who cannot protect themselves.
