A Mother’s Biggest Fan Lost: Skateboarder Alec Chambers, 32, Killed by Drunk Driver After Holiday Gathering in Wilmington

Alec Chambers, a professional skateboarder, was killed by a drunk driver around 12:30 a.m in Wilmington, on December 31, 2026.

EMS personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers and emergency crews responded to a crash involving a vehicle, a pedestrian, and a building on the 120 block of Greenfield Street shortly after midnight.

The pedestrian, identified as 32-year-old Alec Chambers, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver, 34-year-old Michelle Masiello of Carolina Beach, was operating a Jeep when she struck Chambers, who was standing near a parking lot. The vehicle then continued forward, hitting a tree and fencing near a bar.

Masiello, who had just left the establishment, was taken into custody and transported to a Novant Health NHRMC for medical evaluation.

She faces multiple charges, including Felony Death by Motor Vehicle and Driving While Impaired. She is currently being held at the NHSO Detention Center under a $255,000 secured bond.

Wilmington Police Department’s Traffic Unit is handling the investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact them at (910) 343-3600.

Alec Chambers’s Family Mourns the Tragic Loss

Alec Vann Chambers lost his life at 32, following a day spent in the cherished company of family and friends.

He was the youngest son of Joy L. North and the late Robert D. Chambers, born on August 27, 1993. His parents raised him in a close-knit family alongside his brother, Chandler Chambers, in San Diego, California.

Alec was a professional skateboarder who lived with a creative and fearless passion. He turned pavement and ramps into a canvas for expression as a professional skateboarder.

He was a gifted artist and found genuine enjoyment in the art of hospitality as a bartender, where his natural ability to connect with people shone brightly.

Alec’s mother was his biggest advocate. Sadly, his father passed away, and Joy married Howard Callender.

He possessed a rare and genuine nature that drew people to him effortlessly. His smile was a beacon that lit up any room, and his infectious laugh was a gift to all.

Moreover, his circle was vast and varied, encompassing childhood companions, brothers and sisters in the global skate community, and countless souls he met along his path.

Alec is survived by his biggest fans: his mother, Joy North; brother, Chandler Chambers; grandmother, Sondra North; step-father, Howard Callender; great aunt and uncle, Brenda and Ronnie Petrey; uncle, Dean North; aunts, Shannon Twiddy and Allison Garner; and many loving cousins and a world of friends.

On the other hand, he was preceded in death by his father, Robert D. Chambers, and his grandfather, Alston Lee North.

The Chambers family will receive visitors on Friday, January 9, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

Pastor Sam Zumwalt will officiate a funeral service to celebrate Alec’s remarkable life that will begin at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at historic Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington.
